Getting ready for Dragon*Con '09

Ok, this is my third attempt to lose enough weight to do one of those cool girly costumes for Dragon*Con. I'm not doing the slave Leia one.....I've got waaay too much work cut out for me to do that costume this year....maybe next year. But, I'm shooting for something a little less revealing....Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

I've been super dedicated to getting into shape, and dropping some pounds for this costume. The costume itself is very simple....no sewing involved this time. I just have to get a pair of brown shorts, an aqua blue sleeveless shirt, a black belt with a gold solid buckle, two gun holsters that strap to the thighs, two pistols, brown hiking boots, and black fingerless rock climbing gloves. And I have to have long hair to do the braid that she wears.

So far I have the brown shorts. I got them on clearance at Walmart....wooo-hoo! And I have two BB pistols that I'll use. Of course they won't be loaded though......hahahahaha! My hair has grown a lot, but not enough to be able to do the super long braid that Lara wears, so I'll have to get some extensions to braid into my hair. I'm thinking that the shirt will be somewhat easy to find....just go to Target or some place like that and pick up a cheap one. The holsters I can get online at any Army/Navy surplus store. I have some black hiking boots...so I'm thinking I'll probably just wear those instead of buying new brown ones. They're already broken in too, and all dirty, so they'll look fine (no distressing necessary).

This is going to be cool if I can pull this off. This will be the first non-Star Wars costume I've ever done for Dragon*Con.

A Rant....

I'm not really p.o.'ed....just kinda miffed at some of the "attitudes" some people have about costuming, and in particular those of the Rebel Legion and the 501st.

I don't like "costume snobs". To me a "costume snob" is a person who acts in an elitist way because they think their costumes are way more superior than others. Yes, their costume may look really good, and they may actually have great costuming skills, but why do they have to act as if they should be worshiped as some costuming god? LOL! Yeah, hahahaha a costuming god. LOL! And what gets me too is that sometimes you would ask them for tips or help with something you're working on thats is just like or very similar to one that they have, and they won't share anything with you. Like it's some kind of secret. Whatever...

Another thing I don't like is there is still conflicts between the Rebel Legion and the 501st. There was a discussion on the Rebel Legion forums about should the two groups combine into one big Star War costuming group. I say hell yeah! And some say absolutly not. Why???? I know the founder of the 501st was asked: "if you could start it all over again, what would you do?". And he said he would just have made it one combined costuming organization with good and bad guy costumes. Some people are saying that they don't want to combine because both groups have different costume standards. Uuuummmm, well why would that matter??? I mean, wouldn't we have the same standards for Luke Skywalker costumes if it was part of a bigger 501st/Rebel Legion group as it would for just the Rebel Legion???? And what really gets me is that there still are a few out there (especially in the 501st) that think the Rebel Legion is an inferior costuming organization. They think our costuming standards are "too laxed", and we just let any Joe-shmoe of the street with a brown bath robe and a plastic lightsaber in. Excuse me!!!!!! I don't think so!!!! And there will also be people that will have a costume that falls under both groups....i.e. clones, tusken raiders, and jawas. They'll be in the 501st, but be damned to be caught dead joining the Rebel Legion....like there is some sort of horrible stigma attached to the Rebel Legion. WHATEVER........!!!!

I've got both good and bad guy costumes. I mostly do good guy costumes because those just happen to be the costumes that I wanted to do first. But I have now an Imperial Officers costume that I would like to submit to the 501st. I LOVE Star Wars, I love all of the costumes, and I wish that people would have the same outlook that I do. Please people, don't be a jackass and have attitude about one or the other costuming group. It's all Star Wars.......
